Release notes for Ehad Linux 2006 - test 2 (updated: 4/Nov 2005) codename: "Hamakor" ------------------------------------------------------ About Ehad Linux ------------------------------------------------------ 'Ehad' (the Hebrew word for the numeral '1') is an Israeli project offering a repackaging of standard Mandriva Linux binary packages, in order to provide a single localized installation CD for Mandriva users in Israel. 'Ehad' charter is: * To provide a useful assortment of applications in a single CD, including ones that are specifically crafted for Hebrew-speakers * To be copatible with Mandriva Linux, thus allowing use of it's software repositories, and grtaphical configuration tools 'Ehad' has built in support for Hebrew and English out-of-the-box. Some software and configuration options may be applicable for Hebrew speakers only. Minimum requirements are an x86-32 compatible cpu or better, 128 MB memory (256 MB or more recommended) and 5GB hard disk (10GB or more recommended) Current stable release is Ehad 2005. Current development release is Ehad 2006 - test 2. ------------------------------------------------------ About Ehad Test relases & release-specific disclaimers ------------------------------------------------------ Test releases are development snapshots intended for testing. While these releases are based on Mandriva software, un-documented issues may exist, due to packaging errors, additional packages that are not provided by Mandriva, or other bugs. Test-2 contains updated xorg packages from Cooker (Mandriva's development packages). These packages presumably offer some important fixes currently reported in the Mandriva 2006 errata. Test-2 also introduces for the first time specific "Ehad" branding packgaes that have not gone through wide community testing. While every effort was made to ensure this specific release is as robust as possible, please be advised to be cautious. ------------------------------------------------------ Main features in Ehad 2006-test2 ------------------------------------------------------ For a detailed log of changes, please review the changelog. Features for English and Hebrew speakers: - Based on Mandriva 2006.0 packages (mainly 'main' source, some from 'contrib) - Includes all official updates, released until 2-Nov-2005 - OpenOffice 2.0 (English version, from official project, not including base) - Removed koffice - The full range of the desktop applications are now installed as default - New desktop/boot/lilo theme: "Experience the GNU" - Slightly modified desktop configuration (Plastic theme, Kicker color, original KDE startup chime) - Replaced fonts-ttf-west_european with fonts-ttf-freefont (utf-8 with Hebrew glyphs) Features for Hebrew speakers: - The intsallation slideshow (Hebrew only) was updated for 2006 release - New packages: ehad-media (define software repositories with ease) , ehad-guide (a guide for Israeli Internet Connectivity), ehad-radio (Hebrew Internet Radio launcher), hocr (Hebrew OCR), hdate (Hebrew calendar), Anka (new type-1 font from "culmus fancy" series) ------------------------------------------------------ Errata ------------------------------------------------------ Following are non-critical release-specific issues found during the testing period of this release, or other known issues, along with suggested workarounds. These issues will be addressed in future releases or (if applicable) are already reported to Mandriva bugzilla. Issue: Hebrew fonts in terminal are broken if system is not installed with utf-8 Workarond: If you select Hebrew as main language, make sure you click "Multi Languages" box and tick the 'use unicode as default' checkbox. This box is checked automatically if you select Hebrew as second language. Issue: Installer may not recognize monitor, hence leave X.org not configured Workaround: at the summary screen (near the end of installation), check if the graphic display is configured. If no, enter the configuration wizard to set it up manually. Issue: Firefox fonts are ugly when viewing Hebrew pages Workaround: use 'Edit -> Preferences -> Fonts & Colors ' to configure the Unicode, Western, and Hebrew fonts to: Proportional=Sans Serif, Serif=FreeSerif, Sans-serif=FreeSans, Monospace=FreeMono. Issue: OpenOffice has problems with Hebrew font Workaround: change the fonts used in OpenOffice to FreeSans or FreeSerif. Issue: When printing from Konqueror, checking preview box does not work Workaround: install 'gv' Issue: An error message may show when printing from Konqueror to file Workaround: select 'preview', then use file->save from the preview screen Reference: http://nixdoc.net/files/forum/about43829.html Issue: If selecting bit to install KDE, it may be installed due to dependencies Workaround: uninstall KDE if not needed after first boot into Ehad.
