Ehad Linux 9.2b - Release Notes ******************************************************************************** THIS DOCUMENT INCLUDES IMPORTANT INFORMATION. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD AND/OR INSTALL AND/USE EHAD LINUX. This is experimental software. Use at your own risk. The developers of this product and/or Berlios.de and/or MandrakeSoft can not be held liable under any circumstances for damage to hardware or software, lost data, or other direct or indirect damage resulting from the use of this software. In some countries the cryptographic software and other components on the CD are governed by export regulations and thus may not be freely copies as is otherwise normal for software under the GPL license. ******************************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is 'Ehad'? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mandrake Linux is one of the most popular desktop operating systems in the world as well as in Israel. Mandrake linux offers a free download edition, full Hebrew support, installation in parrallel with Windows, an easy and user-friendly control center and the free fonts Culmus. Israeli users had to download all three CDs thus far, as the Mandrake Linux Download Edition includes the fonts in the second CD and the language packs in the third CD. 'Ehad' is an Israeli project offering a repackaging of standard Mandrake Linux binary packages, in order to provide a single installation CD for Mandrake users in Israel. 'Ehad' intends to provide a useful assortment of applications in a single CD and offers full compatibilty with this popular distro. 'Ehad' users can enjoy all the graphical installation and configuration tools provided by Mandrake, as well as the huge software repositories (including the automatic installation capabilities). Ehad is suitable for Hebrew and English speakers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How can I check the integrity of the download? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You should check the file signature using an md5sum utility after you download. In Linux, run the following command from the shell 'md5sum 1-9.2b.iso' In Windows, you can use the md5summer utility available from: http://www.md5summer.org/ The correct file signature is: 14a257c5dddd03c17d5653b302d8bd35 1-9.2b.iso ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I burn the iso? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Linux, use 'cdrecord -scanbus' to find out the scsi device (such as 0,0,0) and then use the command 'cdrecord dev=0,0,0 speed=10 -v image.iso' where you replace the device according to the value found before, set the burning speed and change the image file to the filename you downloaded. You can get more information about burning in Linux using the CD-Writing HowTo: http://howto.linuxberg.com/ptHOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO In Windows, you can use your preferred burning software as long as it allows you to burn the iso as a 'disk image'. If you will burn it as a file, it will not work. Here are some instructions courtesy of MandrakeSoft: With Easy CD Creator: -------------------- Open Easy CD Creator Go to "File" then to "Create CD from disc image" make sure to change the bottom drop down menu ("Files of type:") to say "ISO image files" It will do the rest after you browse to the *.iso file (Thanks for zacheyer) With WinOnCD: ------------ you can select a "track-image" project when you click the New button. So long as you are in track mode, not file-system mode (how that looks depends on whether you have 3.0 or 3.5) then dragging a track image file onto the CD window should accept it as a raw track. WinOnCD uses .RAW as its own extension (Thanks Rick Jones) With Nero Burning Rom: ---------------------- Open Nero. Close the wizard if it is started automatically. Go to "File" then to "Burn Image...". In the next dialog, click on "Image Files (*.nrg)" and select "All files (*.*)". Choose the .iso file and accept. In the following dialog make sure: - Type of Image is: Data Mode 1 - Block size: 2048 - Image header: 0 - Image trailer: 0 - All the checkboxes are unactive. Click "OK". In the next dialog check that the "write" and "finalize" option are active. Click on "Write". (Thanks Antonio Asensi) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I heard that Mandrake install can damage some LG CD drivers. Is that true? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a problem with the firmware provided by LG in some of it's drives that causes these drives to get out of order during the installation. It is strongly recommended to update the firmware BEFORE you install. In the event that a damage did occur, there is a procedure that can reset the drives. You can read more about this here: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3 'Ehad' contains an updated kernel that does not have the kernel patch that trigerred the problem. Nonetheless, you are still advised to follow the above procedure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tips and Tricks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - When you reach package selection, there is no need to worry at this stage about what packages are installed. I recommend that you tick the boxes next to office/games/multimedia/internet/network client/configuration/scientific/terminal workstation. Make sure that KDE workstation is ticked as well. That will install a reasonable set of applications, such as Open Office.org, Konqueror and Kmail. You can always add more packages later using the K->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software tool. - For full Hebrew desktop, make sure you choose Hebrew as the main language and English(US) as a secondary language. For 'Hebrew enabled' you should select English(US) as the main language and Hebrew as secondary language. - It is highly recommended to check the graphic card/monitor settings when you get to the installation summary. It is not very nice not being able to run in graphic mode after installation. - After installation, you will get the first time wizard. Do not use the default theme if you intent to use full Hebrew interface. You might want to use Keramic or Redmond as reasonable choices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Errata ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - not all packages show up during installation package selection. Work around: run the software installation wizard after installation to add packages. - when you add packages to an existing installation, you might get a message about missing signatures. Work around: accept to continue installation - For other errata, please consult the Mandrake site: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are the main packages in 'Ehad' ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are the main packages. All updates released until 21/Nov/2003 are also included. Some packages are updated from Cooker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why do you use "Cooker" packages for Ehad? Isn't Cooker unstable? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It usually is. However the packages I included are fairly stable and are used by me on a daily basis. It is not recommended to install packages from Cooker by yourself, unless you know what you are doing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there any way I can help Mandrake? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since Mandrake Linux is an Open Source product, it needs your financial contribution. Developing a Linux distribution is very costly, so it's up to the community of users to ensure its health. Do you want to help Mandrake Linux become even more robust and powerful? Would you like to see Mandrake Linux become the next standard operating system? Before downloading Mandrake based products, MandrakeSoft asks for your support by joining the Mandrake Linux Users Club. The Club was created to fund the development of the Mandrake Linux distribution and to pay the salaries of employees who are dedicated to "external" Free Software projects. The Mandrake Club also provides attractive benefits to its members such as specialized Internet services and download of many extra-applications: http://mandrakelinux.com/en/club/. Please join the club, remember that 'Ehad' depends on the well-being of Mandrake and the continuation of free download legacy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can I reach you if I have questions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sure, email me at dovix2003 at yahoo dot com. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR SUPPORT QUESTIONS. YOU SHOULD USE PUBLIC FORUMS FOR THAT!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EHAD LINUX DOWNLOAD AGREEMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SINCE YOU ARE ABOUT TO DOWNLOAD EHAD LINUX FREE OF CHARGE (AND WITHOUT SUPPORT OR WARRANTY), PLEASE ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING AGREEMENT: This is experimental software.
